Ik kan zeggen dat ik het te druk heb gekregen met werk, kerk, fotografie etc, maar uiteindelijk is de grootste reden toch dat de passie er voor mij uit is. Van elke titel die er verschijnt heb ik (al dan niet terecht) het idee dat ik het al ken en dat het niks nieuws op tafel legt. Van de titels die wel iets nieuws lijken te doen, verdampt de nieuwigheid helaas maar al te snel en en lijkt het toch weer oud. En tja, als je echte passie voor games en tegenwoordig zelfs Nintendo-games weg is, wat doe je dan nog bij een gamesblad?

Stoppen dus. Eerlijk blijven. Weer spelen wat ik echt leuk vind, of het nu oud en versleten is of niet. Weg met de hype, de z.g.n. innovatie, de poeha, de gimmicks en larger-than-life megatitels. Weg met de halfbakken games die te goed zijn om af te kraken, maar te slecht om ongedwongen te willen spelen. Geen zin in, geen tijd voor.

Ik kan terugkijken op een leuke periode waarin ik schreef voor o.a. N3, GameQuest, Autovisie, NRC Handelsblad, Games+, PC Consument, Oog & Oor Magazine, GameSen en natuurlijk het nog altijd geweldige [N]Gamer.

Via deze weg wil ik mijn dank uitbrengen aan Niels ‘t Hooft, Rob Smit, Jurjen Tiersma, Jos Bouman, Gerthein Boersma, Niels de Rijk, Jesse Moerkerk en de geweldige collega-schrijvers van [N]Gamer. Bedankt voor de samenwerking! Het was mooi. Het was leuk. Tijd voor wat anders.

Het werden vier heerlijke dagen die aanvoelden als een hele week. We arriveerden rond 19.00 in hotel Le Chalet. We hadden een leuke kamer met uitzicht op de vallei. Nadat we onszelf hadden geïnstalleerd, gingen we wat eten en we sloten de avond af met een afleveringetje 24 season 4.

De volgende dagen hebben we de grotten van Hotton bezocht, een tuin met buxussen gesnoeid in leuke vormpjes, een kasteel en 25km gefietst en 10km gekajakt. Het weer was verder voortreffelijk evenals het eten. Als je er eens kort tussenuit wilt, dan is La Roche een echte aanrader. Check de kiekjes.

Last minute-actie. Afgelopen donderdag werd ik gebeld. Of ik de volgende dag een bijbelstudie wilde geven. Van een uur. Wegens omstandigheden was er geen andere spreker. Ik had die avond al een afspraak en eigenlijk geen tijd meer om voor te bereiden, maar ja, iemand moest het toch doen. Vertrouwen op de Heer dan maar. Donderdagavond ben ik nog tot laat bezig geweest, vrijdagochtend om 6 uur opgestaan en iets eerder terug gekomen van werk. Het punt met het brengen van een woord is altijd om “de klik” te vinden. Je moet weten dat wat je brengt ook echt iets is om dan te brengen. Hoewel het best kan dat je een zelfde woord vaker kan brengen, geloof ik niet in ‘even iets uit de kast trekken’. Enfin, ik wist dat ik het over Filippenzen ging houden, maar ik zat erg lang te worstelen met de vorm. Uiteindelijk, vrijdagmiddag vond ik het. Ik werkte het uit en het werd een hele mooie studie, waarvan veel mensen naar me toe kwamen om te zeggen dat ze er wat aan hadden gehad.

Ik was zelf wat minder tevreden over de presentatie, maar gezien de omstandigheden, was ik erg blij met het resultaat.

De actie op Koninginnedag was een groot succes en inmiddels hebben we ons nieuwe stuk ook tijdens de actie in Leiden opgevoerd. Het is een groot succes en overal krijgen we complimenten over hoe grappig en leuk het is.

Op mijn werk is het inmiddels weer erg druk. De klus bij de klant draait op volle toeren en elke dag vliegen de uren voorbij. Verder ben ik ook afgelopen week begonnen met ondersteuning te bieden voor Qualogy Suriname. Samen met een andere Nederlandse collega, ondersteun ik de Surinaamse collega’s bij hun klus. Wellicht dat ik volgend jaar een keer de Atlantische Oceaan oversteek om de Surinaamse collegae in levende lijve te ontmoeten.

Verder ben ik met een team van de JMWZ bezig met een nieuwe site voor een groot evenement dat later dit jaar zal plaatsvinden. Het gaat erg voorspoedig en ik denk dat we de fundamenten aan het leggen zijn om het onderhoud in de toekomst een stuk eenvoudiger te kunnen maken.

Onlangs heb ik op marktplaats een paar lekkere fietsen gekocht voor een redelijk prikkie. Voor mezelf een city bike van Limit (op zich prima prijs/kwaliteit verhouding) en voor Rachèl een mooie city bike van Giant. Net hebben we een gezellig tochtje langs de Zoetermeerse plas gemaakt en genoten van de heerlijke rust, lammetjes, eendjes, kuikentjes en frisse lucht. Zalig.

Verder, raar maar waar: ik heb weer een heuse gaming opleving. De afgelopen weken draaide mijn PS 2 (ja 2) weer op volle toeren met lekkere potjes Pro Evolution Soccer 5, heb ik Gran Turismo 4 op de kop getikt voor 12,95, Rockstar’s Table Tennis voor 9 euries en last but not least: Project Gotham Racing 4 voor twee tientjes.

Die laatste titel is zoooo ubercool. Misschien ligt het wel aan mijn vernieuwde interesses voor auto’s, maar wat een lekker spel. Supermooie graphics, heerlijke besturing, vette wagens (Aston Martin DB9 in da house!) en truckloads aan tracks door echte steden. Subliem.

Laterz

Begin jaren negentig hoorde ik van de Game Boy. Een kleine NES met superhandige, kleine cartridges, een klein schermpje, het was geweldig! Ik droomde er al van om lekker in de bus en de trein te kunnen spelen. Ik reisde in die tijd vaak naar mijn vader in Nijmegen. Op een goede dag in 1991 nam ik een besluit. Ik ging even tussen de middag naar de Intertoys om een Game Boy te halen. Natuurlijk direct met Super Mario Land erbij.

Het was het begin van een complete rage. Urenlang zat ik aan het groen/gele schermpje gekluisterd. Compleet opgegaan in de speelwereld. Het was echt fantastisch. Als de batterijen op begonnen te raken, dan ging het geluid uit, elke laatste druppel energie werd besteed.

Telkens kwamen er weer nieuwe spellen uit en kon ik uren door de vitrine naar de mooie doosjes kijken (Double Dragon werd mijn derde spel). Ik fantaseerde uren over hoe het spel zou spelen en wat er allemaal te doen zou zijn. Vaak vroeg ik of ik even het boekje mocht zien. Ik begon vanaf die tijd ook Engelse gamebladen te lezen, waardoor ik al snel kieskeuriger begon te worden.

De Game Boy was een hype die alleen nog door Street Fighter II zou worden overtroffen. Na de Game Boy volgde de Super Nintendo en Nintendo 64, waarna ik ook non-Nintendo machines in huis begon te halen. De Super Nintendo was fantastisch, de gloriedagen van de Nintendo 64 (de eerste zes maanden na de lancering) geniaal, maar de kleine, handige, take-it-anywhere Game Boy zal altijd een speciaal plekje in mijn geheugen houden.

Dinsdag werd het apparaatje 20 jaar. Gefeliciteerd ouwe jongen! Nu nog een keer die Asterix bundels fixen..

Onlangs is er ook weer een nieuw glanzend schijfje verschenen van de maestro: "It's Time". Het is een soort verzamelalbum, maar dan met nieuwe uitvoeringen van zijn klassiekers (Today, Come now is the Time, The River, Refiner's Fire, Hope of the Nations etc).

Niet echt de moeite waard voor mensen die al wat van deze man op de plank hebben staan. Natuurlijk valt er niets op de arrangementen aan te merken. De nummers liggen allemaal prettig in het gehoor, de teksten zijn allemaal goed doordacht en het is gewoon opnieuw een mooi album. Het jammere is dat er maar twee nummers echt nieuw zijn. De rest kennen we al en van sommige nummers zijn er zelfs al meerdere versies verkrijgbaar. 'Today' zagen we bijvoorbeeld al op het gelijknamige album uit 2002 en op 'Live in Europe' uit 2006.

Eentje voor fans (ikke) of mensen die een start willen maken. Maar eigenlijk, zijn al zijn albums vanaf Today gewoon essentiele kost. En daarna mag "It's Time" niet ontbreken in de collectie ;)

Vorige week heeft Rachèl haar laatste tentamen gemaakt en gehaald. De zomer is dus nu officieel! Onze tassen zijn ingepakt en over enkele minuten vertrekken we richting onze Oosterburen.

Een tijd geleden las ik in de Kampioen over de Romantische Strasse. Een, naar zeggen, prachtige route door zuid Duitsland tot aan de grens van Oostenrijk. Aangezien ik een diepgewortelde liefde heb voor ritjes door zuid Duitsland, lijkt het me erg leuk.

Ik heb ondertussen eindelijk weer eens een compact camera gekocht. Ik merkte dat ik steeds minder foto's begon te nemen, door de grootte van de camera. Een compact die altijd in de tas kan, is daarom wel handig.

Het is de TZ5 (Traveler Zoom) geworden, dezelfde camera die we ook aan br. Bart hebben gegeven voor zijn verjaardag (zie ook de geweldige nieuwe updates op de AoC Log van Irene & Lisa).

Waarom? 28mm groothoek, HD video opnames en natuurlijk: 10x optische zoom, gestabiliseerd! Natuurlijk zijn de ruisniveau's boven ISO 400 onacceptabel, maar het is een stuk beter dan vroeger en ach ja, het is nu eenmaal niet anders met compactcamera's.

Ander heugelijk nieuws: afgelopen zaterdag heb ik samen met mijn team eindelijk de volleybal cup binnen gehaald tijdens de sportdag. Ik ben al jarenlang bezig om die cup te winnen, maar telkens kwamen we niet verder dan de kwartfinale of halve finale. Afgelopen zaterdag is het dan eindelijk gelukt! Een mooi eind aan mijn 'interlandcarrière' :).

Our Father In Heaven By Brian Doerksen
It's always struck me as slightly odd that this prayer is often called the Lord's Prayer. True, Jesus is the one who taught it to us. It's also called the disciple's prayer, because he first taught it to his closest followers that asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." I wonder if the disciples were surprised when he invited them to pray using these incredible relational words . . . "Our Father" That's why I call this prayer 'The Son's & Daughter's Prayer'; because contained in this prayer is everything we need to keep our focus on our Heavenly Father and his Kingdom; yet still honestly and boldly presenting our humanity to Him. And even though it's our prayer as sons and daughters, I love the way it ends completely focused on God and his Kingdom. That's where I want to end up as a worshipper! This prayer became a song for me because I had a growing sense that while our creativity was good (writing new songs about things we believe are true); it's incredibly important that we keep on singing the words of Jesus and the timeless truths found in the scriptures. Special guests on backing vocals are the Ambassadors Quartet. My father Harry Doerksen, was a member of this quartet for years, so I asked them to reunite and sing this prayer with me. I believe something very powerful happens when the generations worship together . . . and even though this group of men is well into the 'grandpa' years, they still have a living faith and they still love to express their worship in song!

Holy God By Brian Doerksen
As I withdrew to pray for direction in the first days of the year . . . I was surprised by a strong and burning desire for the holiness of God that filled my heart. I was drawn to the book of Revelations where it describes the worship that is going on constantly in heaven . . . and in the center of this worship is the declaration that is going on forever . . . the 'Holy, Holy, Holy'. It's as if the angels, saints and all the heavenly creatures know that at the very core of who God is . . . is his holiness. Everything about God emanates from his holiness . . . and every action of God is motivated by his holiness. As I meditated on the scriptures . . . I realized that I wanted to sing it . . . actually 'want' is too weak of a word . . . I had to sing it! . . . and so I spent some time singing every 'Holy' song I could think of . . . and they all were good . . . but they didn't quite satisfy my hunger to sing the 'holy, holy, holy'. . . and so I walked over to my piano and began to sing those words with a new melody, like a simple chant. And pretty soon I was in tears as I sensed the presence of God. For the first few days all I sang was the chorus part . . . . just the 'holy, holy, holy God' and it was all I needed. Then after a few days, I realized that I wanted to declare the core of his character and answer the question; "What are the actions of a Holy God? When we think of a 'Holy God', we would think he would keep his distance from us and our world . . . polluted with sin and impurities as it is. I think one of the most amazing things about God is that this God who is perfect and holy, draws near to us to forgive, redeem . . . even to the point of sending his only Son, the "nail scarred Lamb" to pay the price for our rebellion. But he doesn't stop there! His goal is not just our forgiveness, so we can become his loyal subjects and servants. Our God has the heart of a husband1. God is actually 'romancing' us! When I use that word, I am not referring to the sweet, selfish, sentimental concept that is popular in our culture. I use the word in the biggest, grandest God sense. He is the one who created 'romance' which is intended to be rooted in the 'forsaking all others' union of marriage to be a source of blessing and revelation. At the end of the song, I chose to use the image of "The Lion's mighty roar" because I wanted us to be clear that the one romancing us is not someone small and cute that we can control (like a domesticated house cat); He is awesome, intriguing and fully in charge (like C.S. Lewis's Aslan). Our love relationship with God will never be tame and safe because we can't predict and control Him (He is after all HOLY,HOLY,HOLY!), but we can trust our great Romancer because He is good.

Song For The Bride (Isaiah 30:15) By Brian Doerksen
Shortly after I had begun pastoral ministry about 20 years ago, my wife and I were attending a pastor's seminar in Colorado. A prophetic leader, who was well respected got up to speak, and told us that God had spoken to him the night before 'in an audible voice'. We all leaned forward . . . (maybe we were expecting something new and spectacular!) and then he spoke these simple, ancient, and powerful words from Isaiah 30:15; "In repentance and rest is your salvation. In quietness and trust is your strength" (NIV). I sensed such a deep sense of God's presence and confirmation; these are the things God longs for us . . . and He wants the Church to return to Him as a bride and allow Him to be our husband, to be everything we need and love. I felt a burden to write this scripture as a song to be sung over people. Sometimes we see worship as a 'one-way conversation' but I know that God is longing for relationship, so we need to give him an opportunity to speak into our gatherings as well! And so I set out to write a song based on this scripture that could be sung over people, with a verse that 'set up' Isaiah 30:15 as the chorus. I filled the verse with phrases that spoke of the restoring husband heart of God . . . One who is calling out to his beloved who has wandered away. Our returning to God always begins with our repentance . . . and then a resting in God's complete salvation.

He Is Here By Paul Baloche and Brian Doerksen
A friend and fellow worship leader and songwriter Paul Baloche came over to visit us in B.C., and in time, we picked up guitars and started playing each other ideas and song fragments that we had started but not yet finished. He played me this simple idea called "He is here", and I was deeply moved by the comfort and truth in those words. He is here . . . we have His word on that if we have gathered together in His name. We started talking about certain situations where we have seen people 'manipulated emotionally' by leaders, and congregations that started striving 'soulishly' in a way that seems to imply that it's our activity that will bring God down among us. It's as if we are thinking, "If we can just do the right things, sing the right songs in the right order and be passionate enough . . . maybe God will come down and visit us." We reflected on the truth of the words of Jesus recorded in Matthew 18:20. "For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." (NKJV) What a powerful truth and promise! We don't need to whip ourselves into a frenzy . . . or follow a formula . . . we just need to believe that he is already here among us as we gather. After hearing the first part several times, I just opened up my mouth and started singing "Cast your every care, on the One who gave you life" and I sensed life in the words and melody that was emerging. Pretty soon both Paul and I were singing together . . . 'He is love, He is love' . . . with tears welling up as we sensed God's presence and promise being fulfilled even in that moment . . . two friends and worshippers who had gathered together because we belonged to Jesus.

Light The Fire Again By Brian Doerksen
My roots are Mennonite; one of the Anabaptist movements birthed in Europe in the 1500's. (By the way, when you hear the word 'Mennonite' don't think black clothing and horse & buggy like the Amish; the Mennonite Brethren I was raised among on the West Coast of Canada looked just like other evangelicals). The Mennonite Brethren denomination began in Ukraine in the southern part of the Russian Empire in the late 1800's. They formed because they felt that the Mennonites had grown cold and formal, and as the Holy Spirit began to move, a renewal movement was formed. All of my grandparents were born and raised in this environment in the early 1900s. I wrote 'Light the fire again' as I prepared for a 'Mennonite renewal' conference in Ontario, Canada in 1993. I was led to meditate on Rev 3; the letter to the Laodicean church, and I prayed for God to return us to our first love . . . . just like the MBs 100 years earlier, I was asking God to not let our love grow cold. I expected the song to be sung that weekend . . . and then forgotten, but the following year I was invited to record that song in L.A. for Vineyard Music (on a recording that was called "Light the fire again") and the song caught on. Recently this song has come alive again for me . . . and I am sensing the connection to the husband heart of God . . . and his call to return to Him with our whole hearts!

Hear Us Call By Dave Hensman and Philip Janz
On each recording I include a song or 2 that I didn't write, and this is one of those songs. These lyrics resonate so deeply with me and with our new church 'The Bridge' (www.thebridgeonline.ca) Our church began on Mother's Day 2006, and after hearing it on Dave Hensman's 'These are the days' CD several times, I sensed we were to sing this song in our first service. (Dave is one of the founding pastors at 'The Bridge'). When I got to the line "Something tells me, things are about to change" the whole congregation began clapping and cheering (just in case you are wondering, that's not a normal thing for Canadians to do in the middle of singing worship songs!) There is a strong sense that God is on the move again (as He always is!); and He is longing to pour out His Spirit . . . with the result being life-giving change in our marriages, families, and in our communities.

I Don't Need Anything But You By Brian Doerksen
This is one of those simple 'write in a day' songs; rare for me . . . at least the write in a day part! I guess you could call it my 'anti-advertising' song . . . and I keep reminding my family (and myself) that the ads we see on TV are lying when they say we 'need' something. The special guest on this song is David Kahiapo, a well known native Hawaiian musician and pastor. I first met David through a recording he did of one of my songs a few years ago; "Father to Son" on his "One heart, one voice" CD. David dedicated his version of "Father to son" (including the chorus sung in the Hawaiian language) to his autistic son Jeremiah, not knowing that I had originally written that song for my son Benjamin, who has Fragile X syndrome and autism. When Joyce and I were in Hawaii celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary I had the chance to meet David and his family. While we were visiting with David and other Hawaiian friends we pulled out our guitars and started sharing songs. At one point I started playing a song I had just written ("I don't need anything but You") and David just slid in perfectly with his laid back harmony and gorgeous 'slack key' Hawaiian style nylon guitar . . . and I knew I wanted to record this song with David. Some time later Philip & Brenda Janz went to Hawaii to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary . . . and they had a chance to experience Hawaiian hospitality . . . and while they were there, Philip recorded David's vocal and guitar.

Change Me On The Inside By Brian Doerksen
This song was a 'long time' in coming! I first got the idea after hearing a number of messages in the early 90's on how biblical change is always 'inside out' change. One day, as I was driving down the road, the phrase 'change me on the inside' came to me, and I thought "That's going to be a song . . . and the chorus will simply repeat that line as a prayer". However I then set out to write 'Refiner's fire 2'; a song that was really gentle, slow and heartfelt . . . and all those efforts went nowhere (I tried to write it this way for over 2 years . . . talk about writer's block!) Several years later, I was walking home from work while we were living in England, and the phrase came back to me. (Probably my first reaction was . . . ' On no - here we go again!') As I reflected on the phrase I started thinking about King David and how 'desperate' he was for this change as he cried out to God in Psalm 51 . . . and all of a sudden I realized that the solution for this song was urgent and driving music . . . and before I knew it was singing down the sidewalk in time with my footsteps 'Just like King David I cry out to you' and the song was born. Shortly after that I was at a worship conference in California . . . and decided to try the newly finished song out. Attending the conference that day was a producer and musician from LA, David Harris, who I met for the first time. Years later, David asked me for counsel on producing a worship project with Joseph Williams (former lead singer for the mainstream band TOTO in the late 80's - lead singer on "Pamela" and "A thousand years"). I was amazed to hear that Joseph had heard and connected with my worship music and wanted to record several of my songs! As my project came together, I realized that this prayer is one of our key responses to a fresh revelation of the holiness of God, so I decided that I would include this song. It came as a huge bonus that Joseph agreed to sing it with me . . . actually singing it with me isn't really the right way to describe it . . . . Joseph takes over when he soars up there . . . and I just smile and sing along!

Show Me Your Way By Brian Doerksen
I long to walk on God's highway of holiness (Isaiah 35:8) , but I realize that the older I get, the pull towards selfishness and pride never goes away . . . . if anything it only increases with time! Crossing the '40' threshold this past year sure brought it home! And the snare of fear also remains close by in our fallen world and too often in my heart. . . and so I continue to pray that God would banish (I love that strong old fashioned word) my fear in his love . . . the perfect love of God! I think this is the only song I have ever written that can be played with 3 chords ('Holy God' is close; it has 4 chords repeating and it can be sung as a round). The first time I sang this song, I sang 'I don't want to take the wrong road' . . . until I realized that not taking the 'wrong' road wasn't what I wanted to say to God . . . it's not so much about taking a right or wrong road, but about not taking the selfish me-centered one! I want to be on God's road!

Be Unto Your Name / Holy Holy Holy By Lynn DeShazo and Gary Sadler
This medley is made up of 2 of my favorite 'Holy' songs! Lynn and Gary's song has always been one of my favourite 'new' songs about the contrast between God and us in the verses with an amazing 'Holy' chorus, and the hymn is a truly timeless song; one of the best songs ever written. Philip's arrangement with changing time signatures helps communicate the mystery of God, and Debbie's soaring vocal is wonderfully and powerfully transcendent, which is why we asked her to join us on this song. Triune God By Brenton Brown and Brian Doerksen
On one of Brenton Brown's visits to our home in B.C., he played me a song idea which was close to the existing chorus of Triune God with different lyrics. I was moved by the music of the chorus, but unsure about the verse. I shared with him that for some time I had been feeling the need to affirm the 'Triune' nature of God in song. So I walked over to the piano and starting to play in '3' and the phrase and melody of 'Triune God' came out . . . and off we went. Of course starting a song is one thing; finishing it is often another. The challenge here was to find the best handful of words that sum up the nature and relationship of the Trinity. It took us several years and many drafts to finally say "We may not be done . . . but after draft 14, maybe it's time to try it out!" We used the word 'dance' after reading that theologians often referred to the Trinity as a 'circle dance'; a dance of love, light and holy friendship. The instrument that opens the song is a Duduk, an ancient 'Christian' instrument from Africa that was also used in the soundtrack for 'The Passion of the Christ'.

You Are My Home By Brian Doerksen
This song was written a few years ago . . . and I may have forgotten all about it, except my wife Joyce brought it up and said, "Whatever happened to that song I loved about God being our home?" So Joyce, this one is especially for you! I realized that much of this project is quite intense . . . but I also have a lighter side (which my wife, kids and friends know all about!) and this song brings some of that out. This is also a wonderful chance for Philip to sing his heart out! Maybe more than any song on this project, this song makes me smile!

Your Love Will Find Me (Psalm 139) By Brian Doerksen and Steve Mitchinson
This song is another song resulting from the friendship I share with Steve Mitchinson. I first met Steve in May 97 shortly after our family had moved to England. Recently Steve brought me several songs he was working on, and I loved this song from the first time I heard it. I made some suggestions for minor changes and added the line "Your love will find me" at the end of the chorus, but this song is mainly a 'Steve' song which is probably one of the reasons I love it! It's also a 'Dave' song, a song originally written by King David about 3000 years ago as he meditated on the wonderful truth of being designed by a loving God. Featured on vocals is Loralee Thiessen; Brian Thiessen's wife (Brian "T" is my electric guitar player and friend since we were 5 years old when our dads met through the Ambassadors Quartet). Loralee was raised as a missionary kid in Africa, and I love the sense of 'African soul' that influences her singing. She is now a mother of 4, so she is immersed in motherhood, but occasionally we have a chance to sing together which is always a real gift to me! It's quite interesting that Steve and his family have moved from England to Canada; to the other side of the sea as the Psalm says. The Mitchinsons now live in Abbotsford; Steve is a medical doctor in neighbouring Mission, our wives are reunited in their friendship and we are leading worship together at 'The Bridge'. What a gift from heaven friendship is!

Op de DS sloeg Nintendo al een bepaalde richting in en met Wii Fit verstevigt het nog eens de koers. Nintendo verkoopt naast spellen ook bruikbare applicaties en ze draaien alleen op de Wii en DS.

Dit heeft geleid tot een aantal gevolgen. Traditionele videogames zijn eigenlijk net als films en muziek: ze belanden in de top 10, iedereen koopt ze, raakt er op uitgekeken en ze verdwijnen weer.

Applicaties zoals Nintendo ze nu produceert, volgen een heel ander verkoopplaatje.

Brain Training is wereldwijd al maandenlang in de top lijsten terug te vinden en dat komt door één simpele reden: het is nuttig. (Althans, mensen hebben het idee dat het nuttig is.)

Natuurlijk hangen de verkopen ook af van eventuele opvolgers en concurrentie, maar er is geen reden an sich waarom Brain Training over 5 jaar niet nog steeds goed zou verkopen. De graphics doen er niet doe, het geluid doet er niet toe dus nieuw publiek zal nooit klagen over ouderwetse graphics of geluid.

Wii Fit kan ook zo'n eeuwige hit worden, want zeg nou zelf: de belofte van een strak lijf spreekt elk persoon, die het leven van rennen naar de trein met een tas vol boeken, heeft verruild voor 8 uur per dag naar een beeldscherm staren aan.

Ook hier weer een titel waar graphics, geluid en diepe gameplay er nauwelijks toe doen. Het enige dat telt is de kwaliteit van de applicatie (gebruiksvriendelijkheid, toegankelijkheid en het voorgespiegelde nut).

Kom maar op met Wii Stijldansen en Wii Rijbewijs.

Jawel…sinds afgelopen donderdag ligt ie weer in de winkels! :)

Daar is ie weeeerrrrr…. vanaf 1 maart verkrijgbaar! Joechei!

Ik kan bijna niet geloven dat dit echt is. Errruggg! :)

Net terug uit London waar ik de Wii persconferentie mocht bijwonen.

Zoals inmiddels wel bekend is, wordt Nintendo's veelbelovende nieuwe console gelanceerd op 8 december 2006, voor een prijs van 249 euro.

Later meer, maar nu snel naar bed, want morgen (straks) om 5.30 vertrekken we met Act of Compassion naar Luxemburg voor een nieuwe editie van Licht op België. I love life :)

Vincent schreef al een leuk verslagje op Bashers, maar kort gezegd was mijn eerste impressie: best leuk, maar nog niet geheel overtuigd.

Natuurlijk is het idee dat de controller al je ruimtelijke bewegingen meet, fantastisch gevonden, maar tijdens het spelen stelde ik veel vragen zoals: “wat meet het nu precies?”, “welke bewegingen maken uit?”, “wat ben ik nu eigenlijk aan het doen?”.

Neem nu Wii Orchestra. Prachtig idee: je dirigeert een orkest en met je bewegingen geef je aan hoe het orkest moet spelen. Helaas leek het erop alsof alleen het ritme van belang was, maar dat je er weinig echt je emotie in kwijt kon. Heftige zwaaien afgewisseld met subtiele zwaaien, resulteerden niet in afwisselingen in volume en intensiteit (of niet consistent genoeg om te overtuigen dat het door mijn toedoen was).

En nu komt dan ook de crux, in de klassieke stukken (Zelda theme en Carmen) komen gedeeltes voor, waar je juist niet het ritme wil aangeven, maar puur de emotie wilt aansturen en dat leek ie niet goed te pakken en dan denk je “da’s nou jammer”.

Enfin, dat weerhield me er niet van om uiteindelijk een score van 86 te halen en de titel “passionate conductor” te scoren ;)

Tennis was ook een kwestie van hit en miss; leuk dat je echt kunt slaan, maar te vaak werd een beweging onbedoeld geregistreerd als slag (bijvoorbeeld als je je houding van forehand naar backhand veranderde). Verder heb ik geen lobs en top-spins kunnen vinden in de demo, al zouden die er uiteindelijk wel in moeten zitten.

De Duck Hunt demo was erg koel, maar jammer dat de controller niet goed gecalibreerd leek te zijn: het midden was het niet midden. Maar dat zal straks een kwestie van ff instellen zijn neem ik aan.

Baseball was ook aardig: je krijgt ballen toegegooid en je moet proberen een homerun te slaan. Werkte prima, alleen jammer dat de controller af en toe bleef hangen..

Golf was leuk, alleen jammer dat het alleen ging om de bal slaan. Je kon bijvoorbeeld niet je clubs uitzoeken en er was ook geen sprake van wind e.d. Net op een andere manier gaan staan, scheen ook effect te hebben, maar dat werkte ook onduidelijk en sporadisch. Opnieuw niet geheel overtuigd

Kortom: het waren allemaal leuke demo’s, maar ook niet meer dan dat. Prima voor een kort potje, de diepgang die je hoopt te verwachten, wordt niet geboden.

Maar goed, dat neemt niet weg dat ik een prima tijd heb gehad en natuurlijk absoluut een Wii ga aanschaffen, al zou het alleen al zijn omdat ie zo mooi klein is.

“I would have a second thought about using our resources on what would be the next generation of Game Boy Advance, considering the strong support DS is now enjoying,” Iwata said. “The Japanese game market is now evolving around DS. We don’t need to do something that will pour cold water on the situation.”

The news is significant as the Game Boy is the longest-running game system ever. Launched in 1989, the Boy and its many iterations have sold over 120 million units.

At its E3 booth this year, Nintendo is not showing any Game Boy or Gamecube games.”

Is het nu echt afgelopen met de Game Boy Advance? Heeft Nintendo haar eigen paradepaardje omgebracht?

Bij de introductie van de DS zei Nintendo dat ze hoopte dat de DS een derde pilaar zou zijn naast Gamecube/Wii en GBA. Het ziet ernaar uit dat ze zelf niet had verwacht dat de DS zo’n groot succes zou zijn.

De DS is in Japan een cultureel fenomeen en ook in de rest van de wereld doet de Dual Screen het goed en kan het prima de PSP bijhouden. En wacht maar tot de DSLite komt overwaaien. Die ziet er echt slick en ‘must-have’ uit. Een nieuwe GBA zou in Japan alleen maar Nintendo’s eigen succes in de weg staan.

Het ziet er dus naar uit dat Nintendo van haar oorspronkelijke visie is afgestapt. Dit betekent ergens ook dat de DS officieel de opvolger van de GBA is.

Gaat Nintendo echt geen nieuwe Game Boy meer maken? Misschien stopt ze de lijn even in de ijskast om vervolgens over een paar jaar in te spelen op nostalgische gevoelens en de vreugde van het weerzien van een oude vriend met een nieuwe iteratie.

Wat ook mee kan spelen, is dat de Game Boy-lijn teveel in hetzelfde vaarwater als de PSP zit. En laten we eerlijk zijn, als je moest kiezen tussen de twee, dan weet ik wel wat 98% van de mensen zou kiezen; zeker in het Westen waar een grote focus van ligt op technische poespas.

Je zou dus kunnen zeggen dat ook Sony deels verantwoordelijk is geweest voor het einde van de GBA, maar dat Nintendo er slim op in heeft kunnen spelen.

Het heeft een ‘Obi-wan-kenobi’ gedaan: “If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine”.

Nintendo heeft geluk dat de DS zo aanslaat, wat had er gebeurd als ze wel degelijk een nieuwe GBA had moeten uitbrengen?

Mijn favoriete spellenmaker heeft dus altijd een ijzersterke troef achter de hand, maar zolang de DS op stoom blijft, zullen we ‘m niet gauw op tafel zien.

Wat in ieder geval duidelijk is, is dat voor Nintendo de platformer weer terug is van weggeweest. Momenteel geniet ik volop van New Super Mario Bros., maar ook Super Paper Mario en Yoshi’s Island 2 kunnen wat mij betreft niet snel genoeg komen.

En dan is daar natuurlijk nog Super Mario Galaxy, die er echt fantastisch leuk uitzag.

Ik hoop echt dat deze game de lancering gaat halen.

*Update* Helaas, helaas. Miyamoto heeft bekend gemaakt dat Mario niet de lanceerdatum van Wii gaat halen. Motes zei dat Mario zeker binnen de eerste 6 maanden zal uitkomen, maar aangezien dit dezelfde man is achter Ocarina of Time die meer dan 3 jaar werd uitgesteld, moet ik dit allemaal nog zien. Of in Nintendo’s eigen woorden: “playing = believing”
